The Backus Community Center, originally built as a high school in 1936, is a key historic building in International Falls. In 2002, the non-profit organization Citizens for Backus/AB1 converted the former school into a vibrant community center. Today, it offers a wide range of programs and services that benefit residents of all ages, promoting arts, culture, recreation, wellness, and lifelong learning.
One of the standout features of Backus Community Center is the Community Café, which serves free, hot meals twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Open to anyone in need, the café provides nutritious meals while fostering a sense of connection and support among residents. Its goal is to reduce hunger while strengthening the community spirit.
The Rainy River Rugrats childcare center, located within the Backus Community Center, provides state-accredited care for children ages 6 weeks to 6 years. With a focus on quality education and development, this childcare center serves local families with a safe, nurturing environment that supports early learning.
The center’s auditorium, which seats up to 1,200 people, is a cherished venue for performances and community events. From concerts and plays to musicals and talent shows, the auditorium is a versatile space that hosts a variety of special occasions throughout the year.
In addition to its cultural and recreational offerings, Backus Community Center also provides professional office space and meeting/event space for rent. These spaces are available for various purposes, from small meetings to large gatherings, supporting the needs of local businesses and organizations.
The Backus Community Center operates with the help of donations, memberships, grants, and dedicated volunteers. Its mission of serving the International Falls community is made possible through continued support from individuals and organizations.
