The Borderland Humane Society (BHS) in International Falls, Minnesota, is a non-profit organization dedicated to the welfare of animals in Koochiching County. Established in 1973, BHS largely focuses on the rescue, fostering, and re-homing of primarily dogs and cats. The organization has adopted the Association of Shelter Veterinarians “Guidelines for Standards of Care in Animal Shelters,” ensuring animals under their care experience freedom from hunger, discomfort, pain, and fear, and have the freedom to express normal behavior.
BHS has evolved over the years, with a significant re-organization in 2006 that led to shared responsibilities among board members and volunteers. In 2009, the city of International Falls contracted with BHS to operate the city’s animal pound building, which was then renamed the Borderland Humane Society Animal Holding Facility. The facility is manned by part-time employees of BHS and supported by a largely volunteer workforce. They are active members of the Chamber of Commerce and participate in various community events and fundraisers.
The Borderland Humane Society is a beacon of hope and support for animals in need.
