Channel View is a boat-in campsite — designated site R100 — on Rainy Lake in Voyageurs National Park, a short 2.2-mile run by water from the Rainy Lake Visitor Center east of International Falls. The brown Park Service marker on the rock reads ‘Channel View R100,’ and a new timber dock and stone steps lead up to a red-pine bench above the water.
It is a small site, set up for up to nine people, with two 14-foot tent pads, two bear-proof food lockers, a picnic table, a metal fire ring with a cooking grate, and a vault privy. Like every campsite in the park, it is reached only by boat and requires a reservation and permit through Recreation.gov. Check-in is 3:00 p.m. and check-out is noon, and both campfires and pets are allowed. Rainy Lake stretches some 60 miles and holds about 200 islands within the park — Channel View is one of 47 campsites scattered along its shores.
Rules for this place
Every campsite in Voyageurs National Park is by advance permit or reservation, arranged before you go; the park’s camping page sets out how. A fire in the park belongs in the established metal ring, and the park’s conditions page carries the closures and burning restrictions in force. Food, garbage and anything scented goes in a vehicle, a metal bear-proof locker, or hung well up and out from a tree; the park’s bear and food storage rules say so plainly. Minnesota’s invasive species law rides home with the trailer: pull the drain plug, drain the water, and leave plants and prohibited species at the access.
