Dove Bay West is a boat-in campsite — site R111 — on Rainy Lake in Voyageurs National Park. It is a small, watercraft-only site for one to nine people, set on the lake’s wooded shore with a seasonal floating dock that is in place through the summer (it may be off before June 1 or after October 1).
The site is equipped with two 14-foot tent pads, two bear-proof food lockers, a picnic table, a fire ring, and a vault privy. Campfires and pets are permitted. Reservations and a printed permit through Recreation.gov are required for every overnight stay, as they are at all of Voyageurs’ frontcountry campsites, which sit on the shores and islands of Rainy, Kabetogama, Namakan, Sand Point, and Crane lakes.
Rules for this place
Every campsite in Voyageurs National Park is by advance permit or reservation, arranged before you go; the park’s camping page sets out how. A fire in the park belongs in the established metal ring, and the park’s conditions page carries the closures and burning restrictions in force. Food, garbage and anything scented goes in a vehicle, a metal bear-proof locker, or hung well up and out from a tree; the park’s bear and food storage rules say so plainly. Minnesota’s invasive species law rides home with the trailer: pull the drain plug, drain the water, and leave plants and prohibited species at the access.
