The Backus Community Center, a historic landmark in International Falls, Minnesota, embodies the community’s dedication to education, culture, and resilience. Its evolution from an educational institution to a vibrant community hub mirrors the town’s adaptability and commitment to preserving its heritage.
In the early 20th century, as International Falls experienced growth, the need for a dedicated educational facility became evident. Construction of the Alexander Baker School commenced in 1912, culminating in its dedication in June 1914. Named after one of the area’s pioneering settlers, the school served as a beacon of learning for the burgeoning community.
To accommodate the increasing student population, the E.W. Backus Junior High School was constructed directly south of the Baker School in 1936 and named after an industrialist with strong ties to the area. Designed by architect Nairne W. Fisher, this project was part of the New Deal Public Works Administration, reflecting the era’s investment in infrastructure and education. The building’s construction, completed between 1936 and 1937, cost $391,000, which would be around $8.5 million in 2024.
The Backus building is notable for its Art Deco architectural style, characterized by its geometric forms and decorative elements. This design choice not only reflects the aesthetic preferences of the 1930s but also signifies the community’s ambition to establish a modern educational environment.
By the late 90’s the buildings faced challenges due to changing educational needs and structural concerns. In 1999, the Alexander Baker and Backus buildings were placed on the Preservation Alliance of Minnesota’s list of “10 Most Endangered Historic Buildings,” highlighting the urgency for preservation efforts. Responding to this, Citizens for Backus/AB, Inc., a group of dedicated locals, purchased the buildings in 2002 for $850, aiming to repurpose them as a community center.
Since its establishment in 2002, the Backus Community Center has become the heart of International Falls, hosting a wide variety of events and programs. The center offers performing arts concerts, visual arts programming, community theater, and educational programs for all ages. It also serves as a venue for community meetings, emergency responder training, recreational activities like pickleball and volleyball, and social gatherings.
In 2004, recognizing their historical and architectural significance, the Alexander Baker and E.W. Backus buildings were listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This designation underscores the community’s commitment to preserving its heritage while adapting to contemporary needs.
Today, the Backus Community Center stands as a testament to International Falls’ dedication to maintaining its historical landmarks, ensuring they continue to serve and enrich the community for generations to come. Its transformation from educational institutions to a multifaceted community center reflects the resilience and unity of the people of International Falls.
