Kabetogama State Forest, covering 621,499 acres in northeastern Minnesota, is renowned for its rugged beauty and extensive forests. Bordering Voyageurs National Park, it offers an ideal setting for year-round outdoor adventures.
The forest features dense woodlands of fir, spruce, and birch, along with rocky ridges and wetland areas. Its lakes and forests support diverse wildlife, including moose, black bears, and bald eagles.
Visitors enjoy boating, fishing, and canoeing on Kabetogama Lake’s 25,000 acres of water in the summer months. In winter, the Arrowhead State Trail provides excellent routes for snowmobiling and cross-country skiing.
Primitive campgrounds, such as Woodenfrog Campground, offer essentials like fire rings, picnic tables, and vault toilets. These sites operate on a first-come, first-served basis.
Kabetogama has designated OHV trails and forest roads for off-road enthusiasts and hunters. The forest also includes hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails for a variety of outdoor activities.
Sustainable recreation and habitat protection are key priorities, with specific guidelines for vehicle use. Accessible year-round, Kabetogama provides a gateway to Voyageurs National Park and northern Minnesota’s wilderness.
Rules for this place
Camping away from a developed campground in a state forest is allowed under the DNR’s dispersed camping rules, which set how far from water, from a designated site and for how long. Riding here means the DNR’s OHV registration and trail pass rules, with age, supervision and helmet requirements of their own for younger riders. A snowmobile here needs current registration, and a sled registered outside Minnesota needs a state trail pass to use a state or grant-in-aid trail; the DNR’s snowmobile regulations carry the rest. This is public land open to hunting in season under the Minnesota hunting and trapping regulations.
