Koochiching County Historical Society: Preserving Borderland History

The Koochiching County Historical Society (KCHS) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of Koochiching County and the surrounding region. Established in 1967, the society operates two museums: the Koochiching County Historical Museum and the Bronko Nagurski Museum. These museums highlight the area’s rich heritage, including Indigenous history, early settler life, and the achievements of local sports legend Bronko Nagurski.

Exhibits and Collections

The society’s collections span over 10,000 years of history, covering topics from Indigenous peoples of the region to more modern community developments. The archives include an impressive range of nearly one million items, such as historical newspapers, family records, maps, and photographs. The museum also features unique archaeological artifacts that offer insights into the area’s early inhabitants. Only a small fraction of these items are on display, while the remainder are preserved for future research and special exhibits.

The Bronko Nagurski Museum, added in 1993, celebrates the life and career of the famed NFL player who was born in International Falls. This section of the museum showcases sports memorabilia and stories about Nagurski’s impact on both local and national sports culture.

Community Engagement and Programs

The historical society actively involves the community through programs and events designed to bring history to life. Popular offerings include the Main Street Gallery, which displays local art, and “History on Tap,” a monthly event held at Loony’s Brew Pub in nearby Ranier, where locals gather to discuss historical topics in a relaxed setting. The society also offers guided tours, school field trips, and research assistance, making the resources accessible to the public and encouraging community participation in preserving local history.

Visit and Support

Located next to Smokey Bear Park in International Falls, the Koochiching County Historical Museum is open to visitors year-round, with extended hours during the summer. Support from donations, memberships, and annual events like the society’s gala ensure ongoing conservation and educational outreach. Visitors and locals alike are encouraged to explore the rich history the society curates, providing a meaningful connection to the past and an educational experience for all ages.
