Little Cedar Island is a boat-in day-use site on Rainy Lake in Voyageurs National Park, an easy island stop for a picnic. An orange-and-white Park Service marker with a picnic-table symbol reads ‘Little Cedar Island,’ and gravel paths and a short boardwalk lead among the pines to picnic tables, a fire ring, a vault-toilet building, and a floating dock where boats tie up.

The park’s day-use sites — there are 33 of them in the frontcountry — have dock or beach access, picnic areas, and outdoor privies, and unlike the campsites they need no reservation or permit. It is one of the pleasant midday destinations on a Rainy Lake cruise out of the Rainy Lake Visitor Center.

Rules for this place

This is inside Voyageurs National Park, and the park regulations govern: hunting is not allowed, and no drone may be flown without the written approval the superintendent's compendium requires. Rainy Lake is named in the border waters section of the Minnesota fishing regulations, which decides which license lets an angler fish which side of the line. Minnesota’s invasive species law rides home with the trailer: pull the drain plug, drain the water, and leave plants and prohibited species at the access.
