The Littlefork River Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is a scenic and ecologically valuable area in Koochiching County. Managed by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR), this WMA spans 640 acres, offering a diverse habitat for wildlife and providing hunting, trapping, and wildlife-watching opportunities in the northern part of the state.
The Littlefork River WMA is situated along the Littlefork River that winds through a landscape of lowland brush, forested wetlands, and scattered upland areas. These habitats support a variety of wildlife species, including white-tailed deer, black bears, ruffed grouse, and various waterfowl species. This WMA provides critical habitat for both game and non-game species, making it an ideal location for hunters, trappers, and nature enthusiasts alike.
The Littlefork River WMA is open year-round for public access, with popular activities such as hunting, trapping, and birdwatching. Deer hunting is a favored activity, but the area also attracts those interested in small game hunting and waterfowl. Wildlife watchers can find a variety of bird species in the wetlands and along the river, especially during migration seasons.
Public access to the Littlefork River WMA is available from County Road 13, with parking areas provided for visitors. To protect wildlife and maintain a safe environment, visitors are expected to follow Minnesota DNR regulations, including restrictions on motorized vehicles to minimize habitat disturbance. Additionally, the WMA operates under state hunting and trapping regulations, ensuring sustainable management of local wildlife populations.
The DNR actively manages the Littlefork River WMA to support a balanced ecosystem and maintain wildlife populations. Management efforts include habitat restoration, water quality monitoring, and invasive species control to keep the river and surrounding lands healthy for wildlife and plant diversity.
