The Loman Fire Hall stands on Highway 11 in the small Rainy River community of Loman, its dark-red steel front marked simply LOMAN FIRE HALL. It is home to the Loman Rural Fire Association, the volunteer department that covers this corner of southwestern Koochiching County. Loman is an unincorporated community with no township government — its post office has served the area since 1901, and it was named for homesteaders George W. Loman and Mary McFarland — so, as in many north-woods settlements, fire protection comes from a volunteer rural fire association rather than a city or township.
