Noma Lake Campground is a Chippewa National Forest campground two miles northwest of Wirt on County Road 31, south of the Koochiching County line in Itasca County and an easy drive from International Falls. The sites are drive-in, on short gravel spurs a few steps off the road. The Forest Service now lists it as a backcountry site, which here means no fee, no reservations and no services rather than a hike in; there is a vault toilet.
The sites sit in a stand of paper birch and white pine, each with a picnic table and a steel fire ring on a mown pad, and the lake shows through the trees from most of them. Getting a boat on the water from the campsites is carry-in, which suits a canoe or kayak; a county boat ramp at the south end of Noma Lake serves anyone trailering a fishing boat. The lake is known for bass, northern pike and panfish, and there are fishing platforms and picnic spots along the shore.
A hand pump stands in the clearing, but the Forest Service lists no potable water at the site, so bring your own. The campground is open year-round, with quiet hours from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. From Wirt, go north on County Road 31.
