The Northland Art Society has been a cornerstone of the International Falls arts community for over 50 years. Originally established in 1946 by a group of local painters, including Helen Eles and Shirley Kocinski, the organization has grown into a vibrant collective that celebrates and supports the visual arts.
Starting as the Palette Painters Club in 1955, the society was founded by Shirley Kocinski, Mrs. Sig Bergstedt, and local art educators. In 1964, it was renamed the International Art Association to reflect its expanding scope. By 2005, the group adopted its current name, the Northland Art Society, to better represent its regional focus.
Over the years, the society met in a variety of spaces, from private homes to schools and churches. In 2002, it found a permanent home at Room 114 of the Backus Community Center in International Falls. This space has allowed the society to foster artistic collaboration, teaching, and inspiration in a stable and creative environment.
The Northland Gallery is open on the first and third Saturdays of each month, the gallery displays an ever-changing selection of artworks, including paintings, hand-painted cards, and fused glass creations. It serves as a hub for local artists to share their talents with the community.
The society’s mission is to promote interest in and the creation of the visual arts. As a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, it provides a platform for artistic expression and engages the community through exhibitions and events. Contributions to the society are tax-deductible, supporting its ongoing efforts to enrich the local cultural scene.
