Thistledew Lake Campground sits on the shore of its namesake lake in George Washington State Forest, about five miles southwest of Togo off County Road 551. The forest — created by the Minnesota Legislature in 1931 to mark the 200th anniversary of George Washington’s birth — spreads across 320,534 acres of northeastern Itasca County, and Thistledew is one of its eight campgrounds and one of just three with a swimming beach and picnic day-use area (Owen Lake and Bear Lake are the others).
The campground offers 21 drive-in campsites, two of them accessible, in the classic primitive state-forest style: a cleared area, fire ring, and picnic table at each site, with six vault toilets, three wells, drinking water, and garbage dumpsters on the grounds. Sites are first-come, first-served — state forest campsites can’t be reserved — and each site accommodates up to eight people and two camping shelters. Fees (currently $17–$22 a night) must be paid before occupying a site, either online the day you arrive or in person at any state park ranger station; the DNR no longer accepts self-payment envelopes on site. The campground is administered by Scenic State Park (218-571-2600), and opening and closing dates vary with the weather each spring and fall.
Thistledew Lake covers 326 acres with 4.1 miles of shoreline and drops to 45 feet, and its low-fertility water is remarkably clear — DNR readings average 16 feet and have reached 25. Walleye are the primary management species, stocked as fry nearly every year, and the DNR’s August 2024 survey found walleye running 16.5 to 24.6 inches with an average of 19.3 — the agency concluded the lake provides good fishing opportunities. Northern pike averaged 26 inches in the same survey, and the lake also holds largemouth bass, bluegill, black crappie, yellow perch, and rock bass. Anglers can launch at the campground or at the separate DNR public water access on the lake’s north shore. The lake drains to the Little Fork River watershed — the same waters that flow north past Littlefork to the Rainy River.
The day-use area welcomes visitors from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. with picnic tables and a swimming beach. The 25-mile Thistledew Trails system loops through rolling hills of mature pine and aspen just beyond the campground, managed for both ATV and horseback riding — rated “more difficult,” open May 1 through November 30, with some sections narrow for larger Class II machines and an OHV trail pass required for nonresidents. One firm rule: ATVs are not allowed inside the campground itself; machines must be trailered in and out. In winter the adjacent Thistledew Ski Trails take over, in a forest that also grooms nearly 200 miles of snowmobile trails.
Good to know: the campground is a different place from “Thistledew Camp” a short way up County Road 551 — that is Minnesota Correctional Facility–Togo, a Department of Corrections program site that has carried the Thistledew name since 1955. To reach the campground, take U.S. 65 north of Nashwauk, then State Highway 1 between Effie and Togo, and follow County Road 551 to the lake.
