Togo Horse Camp is one of two horse campgrounds in George Washington State Forest, tucked into the red pines off County Road 551 near Togo. The camp offers 12 primitive equestrian campsites — a cleared area, fire ring, and picnic table at each — with pull-through parking, picket lines at every site, manure bunkers, and an accessible horse loading ramp. Portable corrals and electric fences are welcome, as long as they don’t encircle trees.

Two accessible vault toilets, garbage dumpsters, and drinking water serve the camp, and the well can be pumped by hand or by hooking up your own generator of at least 2,500 watts — just as the sign at the wellhead says. A day-use area with its own parking lot, vault toilet, picket lines, manure disposal, picnic tables, and fire rings welcomes riders just passing through for the afternoon.

Nineteen miles of signed multi-use trails leave right from the campground, and Stony Brook Horse Campground — the forest’s other horse camp — is thirteen miles away by trail, in a forest with about 60 miles of horseback trails across its 320,534 acres. Sites are first-come, first-served, with stays limited to 14 days in summer; fees (currently $17–$22 a night) must be paid before occupying a site, online on your arrival date or at any state park ranger station — the DNR no longer accepts self-payment envelopes on site. The camp is administered by Scenic State Park (218-571-2600), and opening and closing dates vary with the weather.
