Location

The Voyageurs Forest Overlook Trail is situated near the Ash River Visitor Center in Voyageurs National Park. It is accessible from the first parking area on Meadwood Drive, making it easy to find for visitors coming to explore the Ash River area.

Trail Features and Activities

The trail is a 0.4-mile loop with moderate difficulty, featuring a mix of elevations and forest types, making it suitable for a short but engaging hike. However, due to uneven terrain and slight inclines, the hike may be challenging for individuals with mobility issues. The trail showcases a variety of trees, including white pine, jack pine, spruce, and aspen, and offers an opportunity to experience the forest diversity typical of the park.

History

An interpretive sign along the trail details the logging history of the region. Between 1890 and 1930, large white, red, and jack pines were harvested, and today’s younger forest is a testament to nature’s regrowth. The sign also depicts how teams of horses once hauled logs to the water’s edge, a common scene over 200 years ago when logging was prevalent in the area.

Amenities

The parking area at the trailhead is equipped with picnic tables, a grill, and a vault toilet, making it a great place for a day visit. While pets are not allowed on the trail due to conservation efforts, visitors can enjoy a peaceful picnic surrounded by nature before or after their hike.

Rules for this place

This is inside Voyageurs National Park, and the park regulations govern: hunting is not allowed, and no drone may be flown without the written approval the superintendent's compendium requires.
