Wisner Road is a Koochiching County Land and Forestry road near the old Wisner locale south of International Falls, its entrance marked by the county’s brown routed-letter sign — and by an invasive-species alert reminding travelers to clean their equipment and stay on the roadway. The Land and Forestry Department administers roughly 287,000 acres of tax-forfeited land across the county, a land base that has held steady for half a century and has carried third-party sustainable-forestry certification since 2008.
Under the county’s adopted policy — run jointly with the Minnesota DNR because their lands are so intermingled — forest roads like this one are open to both motorized and non-motorized recreation unless posted closed, though gates can appear seasonally or during fire danger. The county network they belong to includes about 70 miles of all-season gravel forest roads, 50 miles of summer roads, and 110 miles of winter roads passable only on frozen ground, with more than 350 miles of snowmobile and recreational trails crossing county land. A route labeled “Wisner Tr” appears on the county’s official recreation map of the Littlefork country.
